Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this limited edition cap & ball revolver today for a penny-start auction, this is the Colt Dragoon U.S.A. Bicentennial Commemorative!

The limited-edition U.S.A. Bicentennial 3-Gun Cased Set was released by Colt in 1976 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of American independence (1776–1976). Each set featured initially three of Colt’s most iconic revolvers: the Colt Python, Single Action Army, and Colt Dragoon—all finished in a deep Royal Blue and marked with matching serial numbers. With only 1,776 sets produced, the collection was designed to honor the birth of the nation and celebrate Colt’s legacy of fine American craftsmanship. Over time, some of these Bicentennial sets have been separated, as is the case with this particular example. This example only includes the Colt Dragoon and its drawer/contents pictured above.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Model 1848 Percussion Army Revolver, more famously known as the Colt Dragoon, was a powerful and iconic .44 caliber six-shot handgun developed by Samuel Colt. Specifically designed for the U.S. Army’s Regiment of Mounted Rifles and later issued to Dragoon cavalry units, the Dragoon was conceived as a direct improvement over the earlier Colt Walker revolver. The Walker, while revolutionary for its time, was plagued by several critical issues, including an unwieldy weight of over 4.5 pounds and a tendency for mechanical failures, such as ruptured cylinders caused by overcharged loads. In response, Colt and his engineers refined the design for the Dragoon, producing a slightly smaller, more robust, and more reliable sidearm. The Dragoon typically weighed around 4.2 pounds and had a barrel length of approximately 7.5 inches, making it more practical for mounted troops to carry and operate.

It featured a shorter cylinder to prevent overcharging and incorporated mechanical enhancements to improve safety and durability. Although the Colt Dragoon was introduced too late to see widespread use during the Mexican–American War (1846–1848), it quickly gained a solid reputation for its stopping power and dependability. By the 1850s and 1860s, it had become popular not only with military personnel but also with civilians, frontiersmen, and lawmen navigating the rapidly expanding American West. The revolver saw considerable use during the American Civil War (1861–1865), especially among Union cavalry units and officers who sought a reliable and hard-hitting sidearm.

Over time, several variants of the Dragoon were produced—including the First, Second, and Third Models—each introducing subtle changes in design, such as improved sights, different cylinder notches, and revised trigger guards. The Colt Dragoon remains an enduring symbol of mid-19th-century American firearms innovation and frontier history.
