Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The 1851 Navy revolver, designed by Samuel Colt and first introduced in 1850, quickly became one of the most popular and widely used cap-and-ball revolvers of the mid-19th century. Chambered in .36 caliber, it featured a six-shot, single-action mechanism with an octagonal barrel, typically ranging from 7.5 to 12 inches in length, and a brass trigger guard and backstrap, often paired with a case-hardened frame and blued steel barrel and cylinder. Its relatively lightweight construction, combined with excellent balance and reliable accuracy, made it a favored sidearm among both military and civilian users. The 1851 Navy was extensively used during the American Civil War and in the American West, earning a reputation for durability and precision. Wild Bill Hickok famously carried a pair of engraved 1851 Navy revolvers during his time as a lawman and gambler.
