Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this HIGHLY DESIRABLE, LIMITED EDITION, single-action revolver for a penny-start auction; this is the Ruger New Model Super Blackhawk Mag-Na-Port “Custom 6”.

The Mag-Na-Port “Custom 6” revolver is an exceptionally rare and highly collectible limited edition, created from the leftover 50 guns of Larry Kelly’s Mark V series after only 200 were produced. Each Custom 6 is marked with “Made in the 200th Year of American Liberty” on the barrel and features numerous custom enhancements, including a striking high-polish blue and satin nickel finish on the grip frame, ejector rod housing, base pin, and unfluted cylinder. The revolver is fitted with smooth walnut factory grips inlaid with a silver Ruger Phoenix, a yellow insert ramp front sight, gold-outline adjustable rear sight, polished and jeweled hammer and trigger, and gold-filled factory markings. While the topstrap does not bear the usual “Mag-Na-Port” logo seen on other specials, this example retains all the defining features of this little-known and highly desirable limited-edition model.

This particular example is part of a two-piece Limited Edition Mark V Series set! This example, which is part of the 50 made, sports the serial number (#81-80588), and the matching pair, which is part of the 200 made, in the other auction bears the serial number (#81-62659)!

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger New Model Super Blackhawk is a classic American single-action revolver renowned for its strength, reliability, and ability to handle powerful magnum cartridges, most notably the .44 Magnum. Introduced as an evolution of Ruger’s original Blackhawk line, the New Model designation reflects the incorporation of Ruger’s transfer-bar safety system, which allows the revolver to be safely carried with all six chambers loaded. Built on a heavy-duty frame with solid investment-cast construction, the Super Blackhawk was designed for demanding use, particularly hunting and outdoor applications. Its long barrel options, adjustable sights, and substantial weight contribute to excellent accuracy and recoil control, reinforcing its reputation as one of the most durable and practical single-action revolvers ever produced.

Mag-Na-Port International became closely associated with Ruger revolvers during the 1970s and 1980s, as shooters increasingly sought ways to tame the recoil and muzzle rise of powerful handguns. Founded by Larry Kelly, Mag-Na-Port developed a proprietary electrical discharge machining (EDM) process to create precise barrel ports that vent gases upward, reducing muzzle flip without significantly increasing noise or blast to the shooter. Ruger revolvers, particularly the Super Blackhawk, were popular candidates for this modification due to their strength and widespread use with heavy magnum loads. While Mag-Na-Porting was not a standard factory feature, Ruger frequently approved or facilitated these modifications through authorized channels, and many examples were ported during their period of active service. Today, Mag-Na-Ported Ruger revolvers are recognized as period-correct performance upgrades, valued for both their functional benefits and their connection to a notable chapter in American handgun customization history.
