Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this BEAUTIFULLY crafted semi-automatic pistol for a penny-start auction; this is the Colt MKIV/Series 70 Gold Cup National Match!

This Colt Gold Cup National Match Factory “D” Class Engraved pistol is an exceptionally scarce and highly coveted masterpiece, showcasing nearly full-coverage hand-cut engraving performed by Colt’s elite Master Engravers. Class “D” was among the highest levels of factory embellishment available, reserved for only a very limited number of special-order firearms, and extremely few Gold Cup National Match pistols were ever produced with this level of ornate decoration. This example seamlessly combines the Gold Cup’s renowned target-grade precision with the breathtaking artistry of Colt’s Custom Shop, resulting in a firearm that is as visually striking as it is mechanically superior. For the advanced collector seeking a true centerpiece, this pistol represents the perfect fusion of rarity, craftsmanship, and prestige—an investment-grade Colt that stands at the very top of the National Match lineage.

This example remains New Old Stock, showing no evidence of consumer use or handling whatsoever.

According to the included Colt factory letter, this example was shipped to Mashburn Arms & Sporting Goods Company, located at 1218 N. Pennsylvania in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on December 14, 1977, under Colt Factory Order #10606. This revolver features factory-applied Class "D" standard-level scroll engraving, showcasing Colt’s meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail, making it a distinguished example of the era.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt MKIV/Series 70 Gold Cup National Match represents a pinnacle in Colt’s line of precision target pistols, combining the legendary reliability of the 1911 platform with enhancements specifically engineered for competitive shooting. Designed to meet the exacting standards of National Match competition, the Gold Cup features a match-grade barrel, tuned action, and finely fitted components that provide superior accuracy and consistency shot after shot. Its single-action, semi-automatic operation benefits from the Series 70’s original firing pin safety system, allowing for smooth trigger pulls, which is crucial for precision shooting. The National Match models were produced in a variety of finishes, including traditional blued steel and bright stainless, and were often equipped with adjustable target sights, checkered walnut grips, and other refinements that catered to both competitive shooters and discerning collectors alike. Beyond its technical attributes, the Colt Gold Cup National Match holds a special place in firearms history as a benchmark for excellence in competitive shooting. These pistols were not only used in formal match settings but also became popular among civilian shooters who desired a firearm that combined the iconic 1911 design with exceptional accuracy. The National Match variants reflect Colt’s commitment to performance, with features such as tuned actions, precise tolerances, and carefully selected components that elevate them above standard production models. Collectors and enthusiasts value these pistols for their historical significance, craftsmanship, and performance pedigree, making the Colt MKIV/Series 70 Gold Cup National Match a timeless example of Colt’s dedication to precision and innovation.
