Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 788 was Remington’s deliberate answer to the demand for a no-frills, accurate, and affordable bolt-action hunting rifle — engineered to deliver tight groups without the premium price of the Model 700. Introduced in the late 1960s and produced through the early 1980s, the 788’s most conspicuous engineering choice was its rear-locking, multi-lug bolt: nine locking lugs arranged in three staggered rows that lock into the receiver behind the magazine well. That unusual arrangement yields a short, 60° bolt throw and reduced bolt travel, which improves scope clearance and gives the action a compact, fast feel; coupled with a relatively quick lock time and a rigid receiver, it produced accuracy surprisingly good for an economy rifle. Remington equipped the 788 with a single-column, detachable box magazine (three rounds for most larger calibers, four for .222/.223) and offered it in a broad family of popular short-action cartridges, which helped it find favor with hunters and target shooters seeking an accurate, lightweight sporter at reasonable cost. Functionally, the 788 earned a reputation for “punching above its weight” — many owners and reviewers over the decades have praised its out-of-the-box accuracy and dependable performance in the field — but the design also brought tradeoffs that matter to restorers and modifiers today. The rear-lug bolt and receiver geometry complicate some common 700-style aftermarket upgrades (bedder action screws, aftermarket stocks, and some bedding techniques require adaptation), and early production rifles (pre-1975) incorporated a bolt-lock feature that can be confusing or inconvenient unless the user is familiar with its operation. Magazine rattle in the stock and a generally utilitarian fit-and-finish versus higher-end rifles are other commonly noted compromises, yet the rifle’s strong points — rigid action, short bolt throw, and competitive accuracy — have kept it in demand on the used market and made it a favorite among silhouette and varmint shooters as well as budget-minded hunters. Overall, the Model 788 remains a compelling example of engineered value: a cleverly executed, accurate economy rifle with a distinctive action that rewards owners who understand both its capabilities and its idiosyncrasies.
