The Remington Model 788 was Remington’s deliberate answer to the demand for a no-frills, accurate, and affordable bolt-action hunting rifle — engineered to deliver tight groups without the premium price of the Model 700. Introduced in the late 1960s and produced through the early 1980s, the 788’s most conspicuous engineering choice was its rear-locking, multi-lug bolt: nine locking lugs arranged in three staggered rows that lock into the receiver behind the magazine well. That unusual arrangement yields a short, 60° bolt throw and reduced bolt travel, which improves scope clearance and gives the action a compact, fast feel; coupled with a relatively quick lock time and a rigid receiver, it produced accuracy surprisingly good for an economy rifle.
