Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this awesome lever-action rifle today for a penny-start auction; this is the Winchester 9422 Cheyenne Carbine!

The Winchester Model 9422 “Cheyenne” Carbine is a 1977 factory commemorative produced to honor Cheyenne heritage and related Western history, issued as a presentation-style .22 lever-action with decorative engraving and a gold-washed receiver. It was manufactured in a limited run (commonly reported at roughly 5,000 examples produced for the .22 commemorative), and typical presentation features include a ~20? barrel, walnut furniture, gold-washed/engraved receiver work, and factory packaging—attributes that make well-preserved, complete examples (box, papers, original finish) the most sought-after by collectors.

The owner states that this example remains New Old Stock, and we see no evidence to indicate otherwise.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 9422 “Cheyenne” Carbine is a factory-produced commemorative lever-action offered in 1977 to honor Cheyenne heritage and broader Western history. Built on Winchester’s compact 94/9422-style platform, the Cheyenne was dressed as a presentation piece rather than a utilitarian field gun: Winchester combined familiar, time-tested lever-action mechanics with decorative appointments intended to evoke the Old West and Native American themes popular with collectors and gift buyers of the era. Mechanically it’s the reliable .22 LR (also capable of .22 Short/Long depending on the chambering) tubular-magazine lever-action that Winchester shooters know: quick to shoulder, easy to operate and maintain, and well suited to plinking, small-game use, or casual range work. The commemorative treatment typically includes a roughly 20-inch barrel, richly figured walnut furniture with checkering, and a gold-washed or engraved receiver surface with themed scrollwork and scenes. Those presentation details are applied to emphasize appearance and provenance—finishes, gilding and wood selection are what distinguish the Cheyenne from standard production 9422s. Production was limited—commonly reported at about 8,200–8,300 examples—which places the Cheyenne in a middle tier of scarcity: uncommon enough that well-preserved, complete examples (original box, paperwork, unchanged finish) are sought after, but common enough that they still show up periodically on the secondary market. Collector value is driven heavily by condition and completeness: original gilding, crisp engraving, undamaged walnut, unbored or unfired bores, and original factory packaging substantially increase desirability. Conversely, rifles that have been refinished, sporterized, or otherwise altered lose much of their commemorative appeal even if mechanically sound. For owners and prospective buyers the Cheyenne works well in two roles—display/collectible and light use. As a shooter it performs like any quality Winchester .22 lever gun: fun, accurate for casual ranges, and easy to maintain. As a collectible, documentation and careful preservation matter most: verify serial ranges and original accessories, inspect the bore and metal finish for wear or overpolishing, and beware of aftermarket gilding or sympathetic refinishing that can masquerade as original work. When presented honestly and in good condition, the Winchester 9422 Cheyenne Carbine remains an attractive piece that balances practical shootability with a clear commemorative identity.
