Introduced in 1955 by Colt’s Manufacturing Company, the Python was built on Colt’s robust “I-frame” (later referred to as the “E-frame”) and chambered in .357 Magnum, while also safely firing .38 Special ammunition. Designed initially as a premium target and service revolver, it quickly gained a reputation for precision accuracy due to its tight lockup, hand-fitted internal components, and carefully tuned action, often described as having one of the smoothest double-action trigger pulls of any production revolver. The Python’s full underlug barrel, available in lengths commonly ranging from 2.5 inches to 8 inches, adds forward weight that helps reduce muzzle flip and enhance balance, while the ventilated rib along the top of the barrel reduces glare and contributes to its unmistakable appearance.
