Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 25, also known as the 1955 Model .45 Target Heavy Barrel, is a double/single-action revolver chambered in .45 ACP or .45 Colt. It was introduced in March 1955 and was originally chambered in .45 ACP and .45 Auto Rim only, with only a few examples produced in .45 Colt until the 1977 125th Anniversary Commemorative. The revolver was initially built on the N Target frame with five-screws, which later changed to a four-screw frame with the upper sideplate screw removed. It was offered in bright blue or nickel finishes and featured a six-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of 1.67 inches when chambered in .45 Colt and 1.53 inches when chambered in .45 ACP. Standard features included a .500-inch target hammer, .400-inch or .500-inch target trigger, target-style checkered grips with S&W medallions, and a shrouded extractor rod. Early production revolvers were fitted with 6 1/2-inch barrels and a 1/8-inch Patridge front sight, while later cataloged barrel lengths included 4-inch, 6-inch, and 8 3/8-inch barrels with a red-ramp front sight and white-outline rear sight. Half-moon clips were supplied with the .45 ACP version. Early revolvers were marked “45 CAL. MODEL 1955”, with later production marked “45 COLT CTG.” Early frames featured six-groove serrated backstrap and forestrap patterns, later changed to a ten-groove configuration. The Model 25 was produced from 1955 to 1991.
