Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this iconic single-action revolver today for a penny-start auction, this is the Colt New Frontier Single Action Army (3rd Generation)!

A 3rd-generation Colt New Frontier SAA in .357 Magnum with a 7 1/2" barrel and full-nickel finish is considered by collectors to be one of the rarest and most sought-after variants of the New Frontier line. According to both collector-compiled production data and Don Wilkerson’s “The Post-War Colt Single Action Army 1976–1986”, only 509 of these revolvers were made, accounting for roughly 3% of the total 3rd-generation New Frontier production. For shooters and collectors alike, this configuration combines the proven reliability and refinements of 3rd-generation Colt tooling with the scarcity and visual appeal that make it a standout among New Frontier models.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
During the early 1960s, Colt introduced the Colt New Frontier Single Action Army (New Frontier) as a target-oriented version of its classic SAA, entering the market roughly seven years after Colt resumed production of the SAA. While some shooters — including those inspired by enthusiasts of adjustable sights — had long campaigned for a factory-adjustable-sight SAA, Colt’s decision was likely influenced by the commercial success of Ruger’s adjustable-sighted .357 Magnum Blackhawk, which had debuted in 1955. Announced in December 1961, shipments of the New Frontier did not begin until 1962. Mechanically almost identical to the standard SAA, the New Frontier featured a beefier flat-top frame, a finely serrated ramp front sight, and an adjustable rear sight — similar to the Elliason sight Colt had been fitting to its Gold Cup National Match revolvers since 1957.

To clear the protruding rear sight, the familiar SAA hammer profile was trimmed slightly. Early New Frontiers carried an “NF” serial number suffix and were offered in barrel lengths of 4 3/4" (later discontinued), 5 1/2", and 7 1/2", chambered in .45 Colt, .357 Magnum, .44 Special — and, more rarely, .38 Special. The Second Generation New Frontier run lasted from 1962 until about 1974, producing just over 4,000 revolvers. Of these, the vast majority were chambered in .357 Magnum or .45 Colt. The .38 Special was the rarest, and the .44 Special was also relatively scarce. Production resumed in 1978 under the Third Generation run of the SAA, reintroducing the New Frontier variants to Colt’s lineup with updated tooling and manufacturing refinements such as changes to barrel-thread pitch and the cylinder bushing design. Third Generation New Frontiers were offered in .45 Colt, .357 Magnum, .44 Special, and .44-40; barrel lengths and finishes expanded to include standard blue/color-case-hardened models as well as full blue or nickel-plated versions. Collectors tend to value both generations for different reasons: the Second Generation for its relative scarcity, craftsmanship, and classic adjustable-sight factory build, while the Third Generation for its greater variety of configurations, finishes, and caliber/barrel combinations.
