Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Python is widely regarded as one of the finest double-action revolvers ever produced, earning an almost mythical reputation for its craftsmanship, accuracy, and distinctive styling since its introduction in 1955 as Colt’s premier .357 Magnum. Built on Colt’s large “I-frame,” the Python was conceived as a top-tier target and duty revolver, featuring a meticulously hand-fitted action that delivers an exceptionally smooth double-action trigger pull and a crisp single-action break that shooters often describe as glass-like. Its most recognizable feature is the full-length, ventilated-rib barrel with a full underlug, a design that not only gives the Python its unmistakable profile but also adds forward weight to reduce muzzle rise and improve balance during rapid fire. Early Pythons were offered with highly polished Royal Blue finishes that bordered on mirror-like, while later stainless steel models provided durability without sacrificing elegance, both paired with precision-cut checkered walnut grips bearing the Colt medallion. Chambered primarily in .357 Magnum but fully capable of firing .38 Special, the Python earned a reputation for outstanding accuracy thanks to Colt’s careful barrel manufacturing and tight lockup, though that same precision also made the revolver more labor-intensive to produce than many competitors. Discontinued in 2005 due largely to rising production costs and the decline of hand-fitted revolvers, the Python became one of the most sought-after collector handguns on the market, commanding premium prices for original examples. Its legendary status ultimately led Colt to reintroduce the Python in 2020 with updated manufacturing techniques and a strengthened action, preserving the revolver’s iconic look while improving durability for modern shooters, and reaffirming the Python’s place as a benchmark for revolver design, refinement, and prestige.
