Item Description
Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this RELATIVELY SCARCE single-action revolver for a penny-start auction; this is the Colt Single Action Army - Third Generation.
According to page 95 of Don Wilkerson’s The Post-War Colt Single Action Revolver 1976–1986, nickel-finished Colt Single Action Army revolvers chambered in .357 Magnum represent one of the scarcest and most overlooked postwar production variations. Wilkerson’s research indicates that total production of nickel .357 Magnum revolvers is estimated at just 1,839 units, compared to approximately 6,776 examples produced in .45 caliber, creating a ratio of nearly four nickel .45 revolvers for every one in .357 Magnum. Among these, the Model P-1676, with an estimated production of only 524 units, stands out as a notably rare configuration. The example presented here — a Model P-1676 in .357 Magnum with a factory nickel finish, 7½-inch barrel, and plain walnut grips without medallions — exemplifies this scarcity, representing a highly desirable combination of limited production, classic configuration, and collector appeal within the postwar Colt Single Action Army lineage.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Single Action Army (SAA), introduced in 1873, is one of the most iconic revolvers in firearms history, earning legendary status as the “Peacemaker” of the American West. Designed as a rugged, reliable sidearm for the U.S. Army, it quickly became popular with lawmen, settlers, and outlaws alike, and remains closely associated with frontier-era culture. Chambered in powerful cartridges such as .45 Colt, .44-40, and later many others, the SAA features a solid-frame, single-action-only mechanism, fixed sights, and a distinctive loading gate system. Its balance, durability, and straightforward operation established it as a benchmark for revolver design, influencing countless later firearms and ensuring its enduring appeal among collectors, shooters, and historians.

The Colt Single Action Army is commonly divided into three major production generations, each with distinct characteristics. First-generation revolvers (1873–1941) are the most historically significant and collectible, featuring classic black powder and early smokeless-era designs, with variations including black powder frames and later smokeless frames. Second-generation revolvers (1956–1974) marked Colt’s revival of the SAA in response to renewed interest driven by Western films and television, offering high-quality craftsmanship while incorporating modern steels and manufacturing improvements. Third-generation revolvers (1976–present) continue production with updated metallurgy, revised internal components, and a slightly altered frame and cylinder bushing system, improving durability and serviceability. Together, these generations illustrate the SAA’s evolution from frontier service revolver to modern collectible and shooter, preserving its legendary legacy while adapting to changing manufacturing standards.
