Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this DESIRABLE double-action revolver, considered a "premium" model in the MK III Series, for a penny-start auction; this is the Colt Trooper Mark III.
This Colt Trooper Mark III is elevated far beyond its standard configuration through extensive custom master engraving and the highly desirable Satin Electroless Nickel finish, commonly known as Coltguard. The left side of the frame is engraved with a detailed mountain scene, while the right side features a finely executed set of praying hands, creating a strong symbolic narrative. The cylinder flats are engraved with “The Lord Is My Shepard,” complemented by “PSALM 144:1” along the top strap, with both sides of the frame, barrel, and cylinder richly covered in flowing scrollwork. The combination of the durable, corrosion-resistant Coltguard finish and the deeply personal, expertly executed engravings significantly enhances the revolver’s visual impact and collector appeal.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Trooper Mark III represents a major turning point in Colt revolver design, introduced in the late 1960s as part of a comprehensive effort to reduce production costs while maintaining durability and safety. Faced with rising labor expenses tied to the complex, hand-fitted actions of earlier medium-frame revolvers, Colt developed an entirely new platform known as the “J” frame, Mark III. This design shared nothing mechanically with previous Colt actions, replacing flat springs and intricate lockwork with coil springs and a revolutionary transfer-bar ignition and safety system. In this system, the hammer cannot contact the frame-mounted firing pin unless the trigger is deliberately pulled, making the revolver extremely resistant to accidental discharge if dropped. The simplicity, safety, and efficiency of this system proved so effective that it became the blueprint for most modern double-action revolvers that followed.

Equally groundbreaking was Colt’s adoption of sintered steel manufacturing for most internal components, making the Mark III the world’s first truly “machine-fitted” revolver. Parts such as the hammer, trigger, and cylinder bolt were produced to tight tolerances with minimal hand fitting, allowing assembly by less specialized labor while still delivering smooth operation and long service life. The Trooper Mark III, produced from 1969 to 1983, stood as the premium model in the series, featuring adjustable sights, a heavy shrouded barrel, target hammer and trigger, and target grips. Offered in barrel lengths of 4, 6, and later 8 inches, and finished in bright blue-black, bright nickel, or satin electroless nickel (Coltguard), it was chambered in .22 LR, .22 Magnum, and .357 Magnum, with limited .38 Special law enforcement orders. As both a technological milestone and a practical service revolver, the Trooper Mark III remains a significant chapter in Colt’s effort to modernize revolver production without abandoning performance or safety.
