The Ruger Blackhawk is a six-shot, single-action revolver produced by Sturm, Ruger & Co., available in a wide range of finishes, calibers, and barrel lengths. For decades, the Blackhawk has been a prominent choice among firearm enthusiasts and collectors worldwide, establishing a legendary reputation in the industry. Early models of the Blackhawk operated similarly to Colt revolvers, requiring the hammer to be half-cocked for loading and unloading. This design posed safety concerns, as carrying all six chambers loaded was unsafe due to the hammer resting on the sixth chamber. To address potential accidents from the hammer striking a round in this position, Ruger introduced the New Model Blackhawk in 1973. The New Model eliminated the need for half-cocking while loading and unloading and featured a transfer bar mechanism that prevented the firing of a round under the hammer unless the trigger was pulled. This innovative design aimed to reduce firearm accidents and limit legal liabilities. Ruger also implemented a retrofit program, offering free transfer bar conversions for earlier variants of the Blackhawk, further enhancing its safety and reliability.
