Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 15 is a six-shot double/single-action revolver chambered in .38 Special, built on the square-butt K-frame and continuing the lineage of the postwar K-38 Combat Masterpiece. Introduced in 1949 as the Smith & Wesson K-38 Combat Masterpiece, the revolver was redesignated in 1957 as the Model 15, when Smith & Wesson adopted numerical model designations. It features a six-shot fluted cylinder, originally paired with a 4-inch pinned barrel as the standard configuration; a 2-inch barrel was added in 1964 and produced alongside the 4-inch through much of its history. In 1986, the lineup briefly expanded to include 6-inch and 8 3/8-inch barrels, and extremely uncommon 5-inch barrels are also known to exist among collector examples; all barrel lengths featured a narrow rib. Finishes were offered in blued or nickel, and sights included a 1/8-inch Baughman Quick Draw front sight on a plain ramp and a micrometer-click-adjustable rear sight. Grips were typically walnut Magna-style with S&W medallions and checkering, though some early postwar examples had plastic medallions.

Over the years, there were various engineering updates affecting parts and configuration, but the Model 15’s adjustable sights and service-oriented design made it popular with shooters and law enforcement alike. Produced under original K-prefix serial ranges, the Model 15 remained in production from 1949 to 1999 in the main run, with subsequent limited Heritage Series and Classics Revolvers line reissues, establishing itself as one of Smith & Wesson’s most iconic K-frame service revolvers.
