Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson K-22 Target Masterpiece Revolver (Model 17) is a distinguished six-shot, double-action revolver introduced in 1947, specifically designed for precision bullseye target shooting in the "smallbore" category, commonly referred to today as NRA Precision Pistol. Built on Smith & Wesson’s medium-size "K" frame, it is chambered for the .22 Long Rifle cartridge, offering both accuracy and manageable recoil for competitive shooters. The Model 17 was part of a series of Masterpiece revolvers, which also included the K-32 Target Masterpiece (Model 16) in .32 S&W Long and the K-38 Target Masterpiece (Model 14) in .38 Special. While the Model 17 was designed for .22 caliber competitions, the other two revolvers catered to the "centerfire" shooting discipline. Known for its adjustable rear sights and pinned Patridge front sight, the Model 17 was a favorite among target shooters for its accuracy, smooth trigger pull, and overall performance. When the Model 17 was introduced, it featured barrel lengths of 6 inches and 8 3/8 inches, which were most common, but other lengths were also offered. The revolver was initially named the K-22 Target Masterpiece, but after 1957, when Smith & Wesson adopted numerical designations for its firearms, the K-22 was rebranded as the Model 17. The K-22’s lineage can be traced back to the Pre-World War II Hand Ejector series from the 1930s, with its direct predecessor, the K-22 Masterpiece, being reintroduced in 1947 alongside the K-32. The Model 17's design, with its solid construction and precision engineering, was based on the same frame as the renowned Model 10, the "Military and Police" revolver, showcasing the strength and versatility of the K-frame platform. As the years progressed, the Model 17 evolved with several variations. In the 1960s, it could be ordered with "The Three T's"—Target Trigger, Target Hammer, and Target Grips—allowing shooters to customize their revolvers for enhanced target shooting performance. In 1990, Smith & Wesson introduced a version of the Model 17 with an under-lug barrel, which ran from the front of the cylinder yoke to the muzzle, adding weight to improve recoil management and stability. The under-lug barrel also enclosed the ejector rod, giving the revolver a distinct look and further enhancing its precision. This configuration was available with 4", 6", or 8 3/8" barrels, though the 4" version with the under-lug barrel is a rare find, possibly resulting from factory-modified 6" or 8 3/8" models. Despite its popularity among target shooters, the Model 17 was eventually discontinued in 1998 as Smith & Wesson shifted its focus away from blued steel revolvers in favor of more modern designs. The Model 16, a companion to the 17 in .32 caliber, was phased out in 1983 due to declining interest in the .32 S&W Long cartridge. While no longer in production, the Model 17 remains a cherished piece in the history of Smith & Wesson revolvers, celebrated for its exceptional craftsmanship, historical significance in target shooting, and enduring legacy as a top-tier .22 caliber revolver.
