Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Model 36-1 is a J-frame “Chief’s Special” evolution built around the classic .38 Special snub-nose concept introduced by S&W in 1950. The 36-1 engineering run is notable for the adoption of the 3" heavy barrel and related internal changes that appeared in the late 1960s, giving this variant a slightly different profile and handling compared with the original 2" Chief’s Special. Functionally it’s the straightforward, proven J-frame package collectors and shooters know: 5-round swing-out cylinder, exposed hammer for single-action capability, and traditional fixed (or in some target variants adjustable) sights — a compact revolver built for concealed carry, plainclothes work, or as a handy utility sidearm. The Model 36 family’s steel frame and short-action geometry make it durable and easy to shoot for follow-up shots despite its small size. Collectors look to the 36-1 for its place in the Model-36 production story and for the variety of finish/packages produced (standard blued, two-tone factory runs, special target versions and limited presentations). Examples with the 3" heavy barrel, original walnut grips, matching box/papers or special factory two-tone/limited markings are particularly sought after in the market. Auction and catalog records show distinct desirability for complete, well-documented 36-1 pieces.
