Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Single Action Army stands as one of the most iconic revolvers in American firearms history, originally designed in 1873 for U.S. military service and adopted as the standard issue sidearm until 1892. Renowned for its simple single-action mechanism and six-shot cylinder, the SAA became synonymous with frontier lawmen, soldiers, and Western lore. Production ceased during World War II as Colt focused on wartime contracts, and the design was initially considered obsolete. However, the postwar surge of Western films and television—most notably The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp—rekindled public demand, leading Colt to resume production in 1956 with its Second Generation revolvers. Continued collector and commercial interest eventually resulted in a full-scale return of the model in 1976, marking the beginning of what is now known as the Third Generation Single Action Army.

This Third Generation series introduced cost-saving changes, most notably the elimination of the removable cylinder bushing, though later production reinstated it to more closely mirror earlier designs. The example described here, a 1983-manufactured Colt Single Action Army Third Generation in .44 Special, serial number SA48920, reflects Colt’s effort to balance tradition with modern manufacturing. Finished in blue with a case color hardened frame, fitted with a 5.5-inch barrel and fixed blade sights, it retains the classic lines and handling characteristics that defined the original Peacemaker. While visually and mechanically rooted in 19th-century design, Third Generation SAAs like this one demonstrate Colt’s commitment to preserving a historic revolver pattern for contemporary shooters and collectors, maintaining the legacy of the Peacemaker well into the modern era.
