Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The SIG Sauer P225, known in its German police designation as the “P6,” is a compact evolution of the earlier P220 and reflects SIG's commitment to blending innovation with practicality. Originally introduced in 1978, the P225 retained the proven operating system and takedown design of the P220 but condensed it into a smaller, more concealable package. While both pistols were originally chambered in 9mm, many considered the P225 better suited for this caliber, especially given the larger P220’s later transition to .45 ACP and 10mm. The P225 quickly found favor with law enforcement, particularly in West Germany during the 1970s, when police and counter-terrorism agencies were seeking a modern, reliable sidearm. In fact, SIG changed its initial submission from the P220 to the P225 for the German police trials, resulting in its widespread adoption and the “P6” designation. These pistols were produced during a time when SIG Switzerland was merging operations with J.P. Sauer & Sohn, giving rise to the now-familiar SIG Sauer brand and enabling broader, more affordable production of the P22X series.

Over time, multiple versions of the P225 emerged, including police-issue models and commercial variants. The German police-issue pistols are typically marked “P6” and were manufactured in West Germany, while civilian versions often feature a lighter trigger pull and lack night sights. SIG Switzerland also produced these pistols using a mix of German and Swiss parts, often marked “Montage Suisse,” indicating Swiss assembly. By 2015, SIG Sauer USA introduced the P225-A1 in collaboration with SIG Germany, a modernized version featuring CNC-milled slides and the “New Hampshire” manufacturing mark, though this model was discontinued by 2019. Early P225s were equipped with single-stack magazines and heel magazine releases, features that evolved slightly with time. The P225 remains respected among collectors and professionals alike for its reliability, clean design, and historical significance, especially as a sidearm still in limited use across Europe today.
