Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 29 is a six-shot, double-action revolver chambered for the powerful .44 Magnum cartridge. Manufactured by Smith & Wesson, the Model 29 was initially introduced in 1955 and became iconic after Clint Eastwood’s portrayal of "Dirty Harry" Callahan in the 1971 film Dirty Harry. At the time of its release, the Model 29 was the most powerful production handgun, though it was eventually surpassed by firearms chambered for even larger calibers like the .454 Casull and .500 S&W Magnum. The revolver was offered with a variety of barrel lengths, including 3, 4, 5, 6, 6 ½", 8 3/8", and 10 5/8" inches, with custom barrel lengths available through Smith & Wesson’s Custom Shop. The 5-inch variant featured a full-length underlug. The Model 29 was available in highly polished blued or nickel-plated finishes. Originally designed as a hunting sidearm for dangerous game, the .44 Magnum was inspired by the work of Elmer Keith, who sought to maximize the power of the .44 Special cartridge. The Model 29 can also chamber .44 Special and .44 Russian cartridges. While it was initially targeted at hunters and enthusiasts, the Model 29’s fame grew after its appearance in Dirty Harry, and it became a sought-after firearm. Despite being overtaken by more powerful handguns in terms of caliber, the Model 29 remains a classic revolver celebrated for its history, performance, and status in popular culture.
