Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 681 is the stainless steel counterpart to the Model 581, both of which are part of Smith & Wesson’s distinguished L-frame revolver series. These revolvers were developed in the early 1980s to provide a stronger, more durable platform for sustained use of the powerful .357 Magnum cartridge, particularly by law enforcement agencies. The Model 681 is characterized by its heavy barrel, full-length ejector rod shroud, and fixed sights, making it a rugged and reliable choice for duty or defense use. This specific example, serial number AAP4068, was manufactured in 1983, during the early years of the Model 681's production run. It is chambered in .357 Magnum, and is also capable of safely firing .38 Special ammunition, offering versatility for both training and defensive applications. The revolver features a 4-inch full lug barrel, which adds weight forward of the frame to help control recoil and improve balance during shooting. The barrel is fitted with a serrated blade front sight, paired with a square notch rear sight, both fixed to maintain zero even under hard use. The stainless steel finish not only gives the Model 681 a sleek, professional appearance but also enhances corrosion resistance, making it well-suited for field or carry use in varying weather conditions. The original grips have been replaced with synthetic Hogue finger-groove grips, providing an ergonomic and secure hold, especially under recoil. This revolver operates in double-action, with the capability to also be fired in single-action by manually cocking the hammer. All markings are standard, consistent with factory production, and include manufacturer, model, and caliber identifiers. Overall, the Smith & Wesson Model 681 remains a favorite among revolver enthusiasts and collectors for its balance of durability, simplicity, and performance. Its L-frame design represents an ideal middle ground between the smaller K-frame and the larger N-frame revolvers, making it an excellent all-purpose magnum revolver with classic 1980s Smith & Wesson craftsmanship.
