Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Frontier Six Shooter - 1983 CCA Limited Edition SAA - is a special reissue of Colt's legendary 1873 "Model P" revolver, chambered in .44-40 Winchester. This particular edition features a sleek nickel finish and a 4 ¾" barrel, with a blade front sight and a frame notch rear for traditional sighting. The revolver's Fleur-De-Lis checkered walnut grips, adorned with silver Colt medallions, offer a classic look and comfortable handling. Marked as a single-action revolver, the left side of the barrel is stamped with “Colt Frontier Six Shooter,” while the right side of the frame above the trigger is etched with the limited edition number "238 of 250." Additionally, the right side of the barrel carries the “Colt Collector Special Edition” stamp, highlighting its special status. The Frontier Six Shooter was originally produced starting in 1877 in .44-40 to align with the popular Winchester Model 1873 rifle, allowing users to carry a single caliber for both firearms. This convenience made the .44-40 combination a hallmark of the Old West, famously carried by figures such as the gunmen in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. The 1983 edition continues the legacy of Colt's iconic revolver, blending history with modern craftsmanship, making it a prized collector's piece.
Since its inception in 1980, the Colt Collector’s Association (CCA) has partnered with Colt’s Manufacturing Company three times to produce exclusive "special editions" of their Single Action Army revolvers for members. These special editions featured 4 ¾-inch barreled revolvers in two calibers, with a variety of finishes and unique features. The 1983 CCA Special Edition marked the first of these collaborations. The announcement of this edition was made by Don Wilkerson in the March 1983 CCA newsletter, where it was revealed that four Colt Special Editions, including the Colt Collectors Association P-1941 revolver, would be available that year. At the time of introduction, the revolvers were priced at $800, which also included an offer for a free Archive letter. By September 1983, CCA Treasurer Tommy Rholes noted that 40 of the revolvers remained available for sale, with the price raised to $875. As detailed by Wilkerson in his book The Post-War Colt Single-Action Revolver 1976-1986, the 1983 CCA Special Edition featured a Colt Model P1941CCA revolver in .44-40 caliber with a 4 ¾-inch barrel and a nickel finish. The revolver came with lacquered walnut stocks, checkered in a fleur-de-lis pattern, and adorned with nickel Rampant Colt medallions. It also included a two-line address roll mark on the top of the barrel, along with unique roll marks on the left side of the barrel reading "COLT COLLECTOR SPECIAL EDITION" and "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" on the right side. The right side of the frame below the cylinder was pantographed with the number “xxx of 250.” The revolvers' serial numbers generally fell within the range of SA65xxx to SA66xxx. In addition, a special advertisement in the June 1984 CCA newsletter promoted double gun cases made for the edition, designed to hold two 4 ¾-inch barreled revolvers. Lastly, in the March 1985 CCA newsletter, an ad from Dick Atkinson offered a limited number of these special edition guns, accompanied by artwork closely resembling the guns themselves, designed by renowned engraver Ben Lane Jr., who was later chosen as the principal engraver for CCA annual show/auction guns in the 1990s.
