Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger M77 is a classic American sporting rifle introduced in 1968 by Sturm, Ruger & Co. and quickly became one of the company’s most respected centerfire hunting rifles. Designed by renowned firearms engineer William B. Ruger and Harry Sefried, the M77 was intended to provide shooters with a robust, controlled-round-feed bolt-action rifle inspired by the legendary Mauser Model 98, while incorporating modern manufacturing methods to keep the rifle affordable. Early M77 rifles used an investment-cast steel receiver, a hallmark of Ruger manufacturing, and featured a large non-rotating claw extractor that firmly controlled the cartridge as it fed from the magazine into the chamber. This system provided excellent reliability, especially under adverse conditions, making the rifle popular among hunters and outdoorsmen. The rifle typically used an internal box magazine with a hinged floorplate, allowing cartridges to be unloaded easily without cycling them through the action. Standard models featured a walnut stock with checkering and a classic American sporting profile, though later variants were also produced with synthetic stocks and stainless steel components for improved weather resistance. Another distinctive feature of the M77 is Ruger’s integral scope mounting system, where scope rings attach directly to machined bases on the receiver, eliminating the need for separate mounting bases and improving overall strength and alignment.

Over time, the platform evolved through several refinements, including the introduction of the M77 Mark II in 1991, which incorporated a three-position safety similar to that used on the Winchester Model 70, as well as improvements to the trigger and bolt design. Chambered in a wide variety of cartridges ranging from small varmint rounds to powerful big-game calibers, the Ruger M77 has been widely used for hunting everything from varmints and deer to large North American and international game. Because of its rugged construction, dependable controlled-round-feed action, and classic appearance, the Ruger M77 has remained a highly respected bolt-action rifle among hunters, collectors, and rifle enthusiasts for decades.
