Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 659 stands as one of the defining American service pistols of the 1980s and a cornerstone of Smith & Wesson’s respected second-generation semi-automatic lineup. Introduced at a pivotal time when law enforcement agencies were transitioning from revolvers to high-capacity autoloaders, the Model 659 delivered durability, reliability, and modern firepower in a robust all-steel package. Chambered in 9mm, the 659 features a stainless steel frame and slide with a satin finish, offering excellent corrosion resistance and long-term durability. Its traditional double-action/single-action system provides a deliberate first-shot trigger pull followed by crisp single-action performance. The pistol is equipped with a 4" barrel and utilizes a 14-round double-stack magazine, giving it competitive capacity for its era. Depending on configuration, the Model 659 was offered with fixed or adjustable rear sights and manufactured with or without an ambidextrous safety. Standard features include a serrated hammer, smooth trigger, 1/8" serrated ramp front sight, and black checkered grips for secure handling. Early examples feature a rounded trigger guard, while later production models transitioned to a squared trigger guard along with serrated front and back straps for enhanced control and a more modern profile. Weighing approximately 40 ounces unloaded, the solid stainless construction gives the 659 a substantial feel that helps tame recoil and contributes to its reputation for smooth, steady shooting characteristics.

According to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th edition, the Model 659 was introduced in 1982, beginning with an “A” prefix at A782,700. The serial prefix was later changed to TAA in 1984. Production ran through 1988, after which the Model 659 was phased out and replaced by the Smith & Wesson Model 5906, marking Smith & Wesson’s transition into its third-generation semi-automatic lineup. Variants marked 6590, 6591, and 6592 are widely regarded as transitional models bridging the gap between the 659 and the 5906. Produced from 1982 to 1988, the Model 659 remains a highly collectible example of Smith & Wesson’s early stainless steel service pistols, representing the shift toward modern American high-capacity 9mm performance.
