Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger No. 3 is a single-shot rifle distinguished by its straightforward yet robust Farquharson-style hammerless falling-block action, designed as a more economical counterpart to the venerable Ruger No. 1. Manufactured by Sturm, Ruger & Co. from 1973 until 1986, the No. 3 was introduced to offer classic single-shot performance in a more accessible package, featuring a simplified action and a plain, uncheckered walnut buttstock paired with an uncheckered walnut forend secured by a barrel band, giving the rifle a distinctly practical, utilitarian aesthetic. Standard factory sights typically consisted of a brass or gold bead front sight mounted on a blade base, complemented by a folding, adjustable leaf rear sight. While retaining the fundamental strength and simplicity of its predecessor, the No. 3 incorporates design elements such as a plain American-style lever. Its 22-inch barrel and relatively light overall weight contribute to its compact, carbine-like handling characteristics. Chambered in a variety of calibers, including .22 Hornet, .223 Remington, .30-40 Krag, .375 Winchester, .44 Magnum, and .45-70 Government, the No. 3 appealed to shooters seeking a reliable single-shot rifle for hunting and target work without the more elaborate finish and cost of the No. 1.

Over the years, a significant number of No. 3 rifles have undergone aftermarket modification, with many rebarreled or rechambered by gunsmiths and hobbyists seeking improved ballistic performance, increased power, or compatibility with preferred handgun or hunting calibers. Taking advantage of the action’s inherent strength and simplicity, owners have adapted the platform to suit specialized needs beyond its original factory chamberings, further demonstrating the inherent versatility of the design.
