Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 66, introduced in 1970 as the .357 Combat Magnum Stainless, is a double-action revolver built on the company’s versatile K-frame. Chambered for the powerful .357 Magnum, it offered an ideal balance of moderate weight and rugged durability, making it well-suited for both duty and civilian use. Essentially a stainless steel counterpart to the highly popular Model 19, the Model 66 quickly found favor among law enforcement agencies and shooting enthusiasts who appreciated its corrosion resistance and reliability. It was produced in several configurations, including a 2 1/2-inch barrel with a round butt, as well as 4- and 6-inch versions with square butts.

Over the years, Smith & Wesson made a series of engineering revisions to the design, each significant change marked by a new suffix—for example, the first update became the Model 66-1. Despite the widespread adoption of semi-automatic pistols by police departments in the 1980s and 1990s, the Model 66 remained in the catalog until its discontinuation in 2004, securing its place as one of Smith & Wesson’s most iconic stainless revolvers.
