Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Beretta Model 71 (often marketed as the "Jaguar") is a compact, fixed-barrel, open-slide blowback .22 Long Rifle pistol introduced in the early 1960s as part of Beretta’s 70-series family. Built around an aluminum-alloy frame that trimmed roughly 200–300 g compared with the steel-framed 70, the M71 typically features a short (3.5") fixed barrel (this example features a 5 ¾" barrel), single-action hammer, an 8– or 9-round single-column magazine, and simple fixed sights (some variants and later imports have longer barrels or adjustable sights). Its simple, low-mass construction gives the pistol a very light carry weight (often quoted in the neighborhood of 17 oz), a short overall length, and a straight-blowback mechanical layout that is easy to maintain and pleasant to shoot with light .22 loads. In practice, the Model 71 is prized as an agreeable pocket/backup-style plinker rather than a precision target pistol: the fixed barrel and rigid slide-to-frame interface can deliver consistent groups for a small pistol, and the light weight and small grip suit concealed carry or as a “truck gun” in its era. The M71 also accrued an unusual operational reputation — reported use by Israeli security services and sky-marshal units has elevated its notoriety and desirability among collectors and enthusiasts — but that history didn’t change the basic tradeoffs: limited magazine capacity, a thin alloy frame that transmits more felt impulse than heavier steel guns, and relatively simple sights that limit precision at distance. For buyers today, check bore condition and slide fit, verify magazine feed lips and spring condition, and beware of late-life import variations (barrel lengths, sights, and threading differ by batch); well-kept M71s remain lightweight, fun shooters with modest collectible value and a notable place in Beretta’s postwar compact-pistol lineage.
