The 1911, designed by John Browning, is widely regarded as one of the best combat pistols ever created and the first successful self-loading pistol. It holds the distinction of being the oldest service pistol in the world, still in use by over 25 nations more than a century after its introduction. In 1983, the Colt Mark IV Series 80 was introduced, incorporating a new safety feature called the firing pin block system. This innovation prevented the pistol from discharging if it were dropped or impacted on a hard surface. The Series 80 also retained the barrel bushing design of the Series 70 and featured a long trigger and flat mainspring housing, similar to the original M1911. This combination of safety improvements and classic design made the Series 80 a huge success, quickly becoming the standard in both commercial and military/law enforcement markets. As a result, most 1911 pistols produced today, regardless of manufacturer, are based on the Series 80 design. While the Series 70, known for its simplicity, has experienced a resurgence in popularity, the Series 80 remains the dominant version of the 1911 in production.
