Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The GP Competition is a specialized variant of the FN Browning Hi-Power (also called the Hi Power or GP-35) introduced around the mid-1980s, targeted at target shooters rather than military or duty users. It retains the classic single-action, short-recoil operating system, chambered in 9×19mm (9mm Luger / 9mm Parabellum), but introduces several design modifications to enhance accuracy and controllability. Most notably, it boasts a longer barrel—about 6 inches—compared to standard Hi-Powers, and includes a substantial counterweight at the muzzle (mounted via screws and/or a weighted bushing) to reduce muzzle flip and stabilize the pistol during rapid or precision fire. The rear sight is fully adjustable for both windage and elevation, unlike many military-pattern Hi-Powers, which have fixed or simpler rear sights. The front sight is usually integral to the barrel weight assembly, lending rigidity and consistent alignment. Grips are upscale—often Pachmayr wraparound or “Signature Model” rubber overmold—and trigger pull is factory-lightened, providing a smoother, more precise shooting experience. Capacity remains typical of Hi-Powers at 13 rounds in the magazine. Performance of the GP Competition reflects its purpose: it delivers markedly better accuracy and controllability than standard Hi-Power models for target shooting. The extended barrel increases sight radius, aiding in precise alignment, and when combined with the muzzle weight, the pistol exhibits less muzzle rise on firing, enabling faster, more accurate follow-ups. Owners and reviewers report excellent grouping—with both standard pressure and +P ammunition—when shot from rest or standing positions. While the added length and weight at the muzzle slightly affect balance and draw speed (compared to standard Hi-Power pistols), for its design niche, those trade-offs are acceptable. Collector interest in the GP Competition is strong because fewer were made (a specialty model), and finding one in good condition with original barrel weight, grips, sights, and finish adds to its value. In sum, the GP Competition stands out as a premium, performance-oriented Hi Power variant—well-suited for shooters who want precision, competition capability, and classic design in one package.
