Built upon the "L" frame with a full-lug barrel...it is essentially the same firearm as the Model 686, which has stainless steel construction. It is also known as the Distinguished Combat Magnum. The production of the S&W Model 586 marks the first use of 3 3-letter 4-digit serial numbering system starting from AAA0001 to AAA0094 and again from AAA790 to AAA2005 and AAA4868 to AAB2003 in June of 1980.
