It is interesting to note that the pistols in this edition were the first 1,000 stainless steel 10mm Delta Elite semi-automatic pistols produced by Colt. These pistols also carry the special serial number range of 10SS0001 through 10SS1000. Our example holds serial number 10SS0002, making this the SECOND "FIRST EDITION" EVER PRODUCED!
This edition also carries the special rollmark "-DELTA ELITE/First Edition/10MM(within the Delta Logo)/Stainless" on the left side of the slide, and "Government Model-Colt 10mm Auto" on the right side of the slide. The pistols in this special edition offering were also shipped with a beveled magazine well, an extra magazine, checkered mainspring housing, and a serrated front strap.

The Colt Delta Elite is a modified M1911 pistol, Series 80 configuration, chambered for the 10mm Auto. Released in 1987, it was the second commercial pistol chambered in the 10mm cartridge, following the Dornaus & Dixon manufactured Bren Ten pistol, which was released in 1983 and pioneered the 10mm Auto chambering. Its potent 10mm auto cartridge was born as a result of testing by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which determined that this round theoretically possessed superior one-shot stopping power over the 9mm Parabellum and even the .45 ACP. Produced over a nine-year span ending in 1996, these pistols are based on John Browning's highly successful M1911 semi-automatic pistol and its descendent, the Colt Series 80.
