Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this sought-after semi-automatic pistol for a penny-start auction; this is the Colt Double Eagle Series 90!

The Double Eagle is the sister model variant to such classics as the Gold Cup National Match, Government, Combat Commander, and Delta Elite Models.

The Colt Double Eagle Series 90 was manufactured from 1990 to 1996 as Colt’s innovative attempt to modernize the classic 1911 with a double-action/single-action trigger system and added safety features. Designed for both law enforcement and civilian use, it offered the familiar ergonomics of the 1911 with the added convenience of a DA/SA trigger and decocking lever.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Double Eagle Series 90 was Colt’s ambitious foray into the world of double-action/single-action (DA/SA) semi-automatic pistols during a time when law enforcement and civilian markets were beginning to demand modernized versions of classic designs. Introduced in the late 1980s, the Double Eagle was based heavily on the venerable M1911 platform but introduced a DA/SA trigger mechanism, aligning Colt with contemporary trends led by competitors like SIG Sauer and Beretta. The Double Eagle retained the familiar lines of the 1911 but incorporated significant internal reengineering, including a decocking lever and a trigger system designed to allow the first shot to be fired in double-action, with subsequent shots reverting to single action. Offered in full-size, Commander, and Officer configurations, the pistol was chambered in popular calibers such as .45 ACP, 10mm Auto, 9mm, .40 S&W, and .38 Super, which made it highly adaptable to both defensive and sporting roles. Despite its engineering intent and innovation, the Colt Double Eagle faced challenges in both form and function. The DA/SA trigger mechanism was often criticized for being heavy and less refined compared to competitors, and early models had reliability and durability issues with the trigger linkage system, though later variants (notably the Mark II models) improved upon this with redesigned internals. Aesthetically, the Double Eagle maintained the 1911 profile but added bulk due to the additional parts required for its DA/SA system, making it less sleek than its single-action counterpart. Still, for collectors and Colt enthusiasts, the Double Eagle represents a unique chapter in the company's history—a bold attempt to modernize an American classic. Though it never achieved the commercial success of Colt’s traditional 1911s, it holds a niche appeal as a rare Colt design that blends classic styling with modern operational concepts.
