Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 17 is a six-shot double-action revolver that uses .22 LR rounds. It is based on Smith & Wesson's medium-sized K-frame. The Model 16 and Model 17 were originally part of the company's Pre-World War 2 Hand Ejector series in the 1930s. After World War 2, these two revolver models were introduced as companion pieces, known as the K-32 and K-22, respectively. The K-32 Masterpiece (Model 16) was first launched in 1935 and was chambered in .32 S&W Long caliber. Production was stopped during World War 2, but the revolver was reintroduced in 1947 along with the K-22 Masterpiece (Model 17), which used the .22 Long Rifle caliber. The Model 16 was no longer produced after 1974 because the .32 S&W Long caliber was becoming less popular. Similarly, the Model 17 was discontinued in 1989 as the company shifted away from making blued steel revolvers at that time. In 1989, Smith & Wesson reintroduced the Model 16, chambered in .32 H&R Magnum. This iteration was built on the square-butt K-frame with a three-screw design. It was available with 4", 6", or 8 3/8" full-lug, ribbed barrels and came exclusively in a blue finish. This model also featured a six-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of 1.56", and was equipped with target-grade components including a target hammer and target trigger (depending on barrel length).

The 4" version came fitted with a .375" semi-target hammer and a .312" smooth combat trigger, while the 6" and 8 3/8" variants included a .500" wide target hammer and a .400" serrated target trigger. All versions featured Goncalo Alves wood combat stocks with finger grooves and S&W medallions, a 1/8" Patridge front sight, and an adjustable micrometer-click rear sight. Additional refinements included a 10-groove serrated backstrap and forestrap for enhanced grip. Marked with a three-letter serial prefix, these revolvers saw a limited production run of approximately 8,800 units across all barrel lengths. Production ran from 1989 to 1992.
