The Colt Government Model .380, often just called the Colt .380 Government, is a compact, single-action semi-automatic pocket pistol produced by Colt’s Manufacturing Company from 1983 until around 1997, designed to offer 1911-style controls and handling in a smaller, more easily carried package chambered for the modest but effective .380 ACP cartridge. At roughly 78 % the size of a full-sized M1911, this pistol employs a locked-breech, short-recoil design loosely inspired by the Government Model’s operation — including a separate barrel bushing and recoil spring plug — which helped tame recoil and provide smooth, reliable function in a lightweight platform that was pleasant to shoot compared with simple blowback pocket pistols. Measuring about 6.5 inches overall with a 3.25-inch barrel and tipping the scales around 21.75 oz unloaded, the Government .380 combined practical concealability with comfortable ergonomics that echoed the familiar 1911 control layout, including a frame-mounted thumb safety that could be applied on or off hammer. Feeding from a 7-round magazine, it delivered respectable capacity for its size, and its fixed or simple combat sights facilitated quick target acquisition at typical personal-defense distances.
