Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt King Cobra is a robust double-action revolver introduced by Colt's Manufacturing Company in 1986 as part of its “Snake Gun” lineup, designed to compete directly with heavy-duty .357 Magnum revolvers of the era. Built on Colt’s medium-large V-frame (later evolved into the SF-VI/DS-II frame), the King Cobra was engineered for strength and durability, chambered primarily in .357 Magnum while also capable of firing .38 Special cartridges for reduced recoil and economical practice. It features a solid stainless steel construction, including both the frame and the barrel, offering excellent corrosion and wear resistance, as well as a substantial weight that helps tame the recoil of full-power magnum loads. One of its defining characteristics is the full underlug barrel, which adds forward weight for improved balance and reduced muzzle rise, along with a ventilated rib and adjustable rear sights paired with a red-ramp front sight for enhanced target acquisition. The revolver employs Colt’s traditional double-action/single-action trigger system, known for its smooth, stacking double-action pull and crisp single-action break, and later variants utilize a transfer bar safety mechanism to improve drop safety. Barrel lengths commonly included 2.5-inch, 4-inch, 6-inch, and 8-inch configurations, making the King Cobra adaptable for concealed carry, duty use, target shooting, and hunting. Although original production ceased in the 1990s as Colt scaled back revolver manufacturing, the model was reintroduced in modern form decades later, reflecting renewed interest in high-quality wheelguns. Today, the Colt King Cobra is valued both as a capable magnum revolver and as part of Colt’s iconic Snake Gun heritage, appreciated for its strength, distinctive styling, and enduring reputation for performance.
