Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this semi-automatic pistol today for a penny-start auction; this is the Smith & Wesson 4006 Comp Forty Performance Center!
According to a factory letter from Smith & Wesson regarding the Model 4006 with serial number PCD0039 (see the final image in the picture sequence for reference), these pistols were originally built with a 5 1/4" BARSTO barrel. At the time of production, it was too late to update the advertising flyer to reflect this change, as the flyer had already been revised once to list a 4 5/8" barrel—which, notably, was never actually produced. As a result, the information presented in the original promotional material (also included at the end of the image sequence) does not accurately match the specifications of the firearm itself. The BARSTO barrels were used exclusively in the earlier production runs of the Model 4006 Comp .40 S&W Pistol. Additionally, the .40 S&W Tactical Pistol was a special offering distributed through Lew Horton, but it did not become available until November of 1992. It is believed that approximately 200 of these pistols were produced, and this particular example features a low, early serial number.
According to the owner, this example has an extremely low round count and a very tight slide-to-frame fit.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The standard Smith & Wesson Model 4006 is a full-sized, semi-automatic pistol chambered in .40 S&W, introduced in the early 1990s as part of Smith & Wesson’s Third Generation series. Built with a stainless steel frame and slide, the 4006 was designed to meet the rigorous demands of law enforcement, offering strength, reliability, and reduced recoil thanks to its all-metal construction. It features a traditional double-action/single-action trigger system, ambidextrous slide-mounted safety/decocker, and fixed three-dot sights (typically a white dot front and Novak Lo-Mount rear). The 4006 utilizes an 11-round magazine and is fitted with factory synthetic wraparound grips, delivering solid ergonomics and control. Widely regarded for its durability and performance, the Model 4006 became a staple sidearm for many police departments throughout the 1990s.

The example bearing serial number PCD0007 is an exceptional and uncommon variation of the standard Model 4006. Manufactured in 1991, this pistol is equipped with a factory-installed 5 ¼-inch BARSTO barrel—a notable departure from the typical 4-inch version. According to a factory letter from Smith & Wesson concerning a near-identical pistol (serial number PCD0039), this upgraded barrel configuration was implemented before final marketing materials could be updated, causing a discrepancy between flyer specifications and the actual product. The BARSTO barrel was used exclusively on early runs of the 4006 Comp .40 S&W pistols and was not included in the later Lew Horton-distributed Tactical models released in late 1992. With an early serial number and estimated production of only 200 units, this variation represents a rare, performance-enhanced iteration of the 4006, offering superior accuracy and collectibility for discerning enthusiasts.
