Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 16-4 is a K-frame “Masterpiece” revolver chambered for the .32 H&R Magnum (often marketed in the K-32/Masterpiece family), built to deliver target-grade handling in a compact, six-shot platform. Unlike earlier small-bore K-32s, the 16-4 is most often encountered with a full-lug barrel and was offered in multiple barrel lengths (commonly 4, 6 and 8), which improves balance, protects the ejector rod and enhances the revolver’s inherent accuracy and solid lockup. Introduced as a modern re-interpretation of the K-32/Masterpiece line in the late 1980s, the 16-4 production run is small and generally dated to roughly 1989–1992 (Smith & Wesson’s K-frame .32 Magnum specials resurfaced in that window), so surviving examples with original finishes, long barrels and boxes/manuals are comparatively scarce and therefore more interesting to collectors. The .32 H&R Magnum chambering gives the Model 16-4 a versatile performance envelope—higher velocity than the old .32 S&W Long but still lowish recoil—making it suitable for target work, light hunting, or as a high-quality collector’s piece within S&W’s K-frame lineage.
