Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 640 is a compact, rugged .38 S&W Special double-action-only revolver built on S&W’s stainless steel round-butt J-frame. Designed for concealed carry and dependable service, it features a 5-shot fluted cylinder rated for +P loads, a fully enclosed hammer for snag-free draw, and a smooth 0.312" combat trigger. Finish and trim options include a 1-7/8" barrel fitted with Goncalo Alves stocks or a 3" barrel with Morado wood stocks and S&W medallions or practical factory rubber grips that provide enhanced control and recoil management. The Model 640 retains classic S&W geometry — a 1.345" × 1.645" cylinder opening, approximately 0.538" frame thickness, and a 2.0" yoke — and early production examples sometimes carry serial numbers prefixed “CEN0000.” Manufactured 1989–1996, it pairs compact dimensions with proven, service-grade durability.
