The Smith & Wesson Model 649, also known as the .38 Bodyguard Stainless, is a double/single-action revolver chambered in .38 Special +P, built on the stainless round butt J-frame with three-screw construction and a shrouded hammer design. This enclosed hammer profile not only preserves the option for single-action fire, but also enhances its snag-resistant characteristics, making it especially well-suited for discreet carry. The Model 649 was the stainless steel version of the Model 49, offered with a 2-inch barrel and a satin stainless steel finish, providing excellent corrosion resistance along with long-term durability under regular use. Production featured a five-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of 1.53 inches, paired with a 1/10-inch serrated ramp front sight and an integral square notch rear sight, offering a practical and durable sighting arrangement. It was further equipped with checkered walnut magna-style grips bearing Smith & Wesson medallions, complementing both its handling characteristics and traditional aesthetic.
