Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 686 is a double/single-action revolver chambered in .357 Magnum and .38 Special, built on Smith & Wesson’s square-butt stainless steel L-frame with three-screws, and represents the stainless steel counterpart to the blued Model 586. Designed to combine the strength of the N-frame with the handling characteristics of the K-frame, the Model 686 quickly earned a reputation for durability, balance, and accuracy. It was offered with 2 1/2-inch, 4-inch, 6-inch, and 8 3/8-inch full-lug barrels, and features a six-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of approximately 1.62 inches. The revolver incorporates a square-butt L-frame with a 10-groove serrated backstrap and forestrap, a .375-inch semi-target hammer, and either a .312-inch smooth combat trigger or a .400-inch serrated target trigger, allowing it to be configured for duty, defense, or target shooting. Sight options included a red ramp front sight or an optional four-position front sight system, paired with a white-outline or black rear blade for precise sight alignment.

Factory grips were checkered Goncalo Alves target with Smith & Wesson medallions and speed-loader cutouts, contributing to the revolver’s classic appearance and excellent ergonomics. Although examples are known in the AAA serial range, regular production began with the AAD prefix, with early production numbers observed in the AAA0095–AAA0789 range, and the Model 686 has remained in production from 1980 to the present, becoming one of Smith & Wesson’s most enduring and iconic modern revolver designs.
