The Colt Government Enhanced (01970E) MK IV Series 80 is part of Colt’s early-1990s “Enhanced” 1911 line, produced primarily circa 1992–1998, when Colt updated much of its Government Model lineup with factory-installed modern features. The Enhanced pistols incorporated features that were previously typical of custom gunsmith work while retaining the classic forged steel Government Model frame and slide and traditional internal design. Serial numbers for Enhanced pistols typically carry an “E” suffix, denoting the Enhanced configuration. Among collectors, the Government Model Enhanced occupies an interesting transitional niche between the classic Series 70/early Series 80 Government Models and the later XS/XSE series pistols that followed. While not a custom or limited-production model, it reflects Colt’s shift toward factory modernized 1911s during the 1990s and remains a distinctive example of Colt’s evolutionary period before the introduction of the XSE line.

The Colt Government Enhanced (01970E) MK IV Series 80 is part of Colt’s early-1990s “Enhanced” 1911 line, produced primarily circa 1992–1998, when Colt updated much of its Government Model lineup with factory-installed modern features. Building on the Series 80 firing-pin safety system introduced in 1983, the Enhanced Government Model represents Colt’s first major factory modernization effort of the traditional Government Model platform. The Enhanced pistols incorporated features that were previously typical of custom gunsmith work while retaining the classic forged steel Government Model frame and slide and traditional internal design. Collector-recognized Enhanced features include a flat-topped, anti-glare ribbed slide with angled Gold Cup–style rear cocking serrations, a lowered and flared ejection port, an undercut trigger-guard relief cut, a Colt “duckbill” grip safety with matching round-profile hammer, a beveled magazine well, and high-profile three-dot sights. These pistols were also commonly equipped with Colt-marked wraparound rubber grips and a long trigger, with various polymer or aluminum small parts typical of mid-1990s Colt production.
