Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger P90 is Ruger’s beefy, full-size entry in the P-series family—introduced in 1991 as the company’s first traditional double-action/single-action .45 ACP semi-automatic—and it represents a scaled-up, heavy-duty evolution of the P-series geometry adapted for the big .45 cartridge. Built on an investment-cast aluminum-alloy frame with a steel slide and a Browning-type short-recoil, tilting-barrel lockup, the P90 kept the P-series’ rugged, overbuilt character (a generous, blocky frame and thick mating surfaces) to reliably handle full-power .45 loads while offering the familiar DA/SA control layout with an ambidextrous slide safety/decocker on many configurations. Ergonomically the pistol is substantial—more bulky than contemporary striker-fired designs—but that mass and the single-stack grip make it a steady, controllable shooter with a fairly long sight radius (helpful for accuracy) and a trigger that, while not match-grade out of the box, settles into a very usable feel for service and range work. The P90 typically fed from proprietary single-stack magazines (commonly eight rounds, depending on state restrictions and model iterations) and featured dovetailed three-dot sights, a frame-mounted slide stop, and a manual safety/decocker arrangement consistent with other P-series pistols; it earned a reputation for above-average accuracy for its price class and for being a rugged, reliable service platform that was straightforward to maintain. Over its production life the P90 (and related .45 P-series variants) remained in Ruger’s catalog for nearly two decades before being phased out as Ruger moved to newer SR/SR-series designs—leaving the P90 as a solidly built, somewhat old-school .45 pistol that still appeals to buyers who value mechanical simplicity, durability, and good accuracy in a traditional DA/SA .45 package.
