Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 617 is a stainless-steel K-target-frame revolver chambered in .22 LR, built on a three-screw K frame available in square- or round-butt configurations depending on the variant. Most models feature a 6-shot fluted cylinder (nominal length 1.62") and full-lug, ribbed barrels in lengths of 4", 6", or 8-3/8". Trigger and hammer combinations vary across the series, including a .312" smooth combat trigger or a .400" serrated trigger, paired with either a .375" semi-target or .500" target hammer. Sighting consists of a pinned Patridge front sight paired with an adjustable micrometer-click rear. The 617 includes several factory variations and limited editions, such as the 1991 Ashland Shooting Supplies special, which was offered in 4" and 6" lengths without the full lug. In 1996, Smith & Wesson introduced a variant featuring an aluminum-alloy 10-shot fluted cylinder (nominal length 1.62") on a stainless round-butt K frame with Hogue rubber grips and the S&W monogram. After weak sales of the alloy version, the 10-shot design returned in October 1997 as an all-stainless option. Production of the Model 617 and its variants spans from circa 1989 to the present day, encompassing a broad range of configurations and collector-focused editions that have made it a staple among target and recreational shooters alike.
