The Smith & Wesson Model 686 is a double-action revolver, available in both six and seven-shot configurations, designed to chamber the powerful .357 Magnum cartridge while also being capable of firing the more widely available .38 Special rounds. Introduced by Smith & Wesson in 1981, the Model 686 quickly became a popular choice among collectors and shooting enthusiasts due to its rugged design, accuracy, and versatility. Over the years, the Model 686 has been offered with barrel lengths ranging from 2.5", 3", 4", 5", 6", 7", and 8 3/8". Additionally, custom barrel lengths have been available through special orders from Smith & Wesson's Performance Center or through modifications made by aftermarket gunsmiths. Since its introduction, the Model 686 has undergone several variations, incorporating design changes and improvements, cementing its place as a timeless and highly regarded revolver.
