This example of the Colt .22, also known as the Colt Cadet, is made even more versatile and desirable with the inclusion of an interchangeable Colt .22 Target package. Alongside the standard 4 ½" barrel, it comes with a 6" ventilated rib Target barrel featuring a full-length grooved sight rib, an additional slide assembly, and an extra magazine. Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt .22, more commonly referred to as the Colt Cadet, was introduced in 1994 and produced until 1998 as Colt’s attempt to reestablish itself in the competitive rimfire semi-automatic pistol market. Chambered in the highly versatile and affordable .22 Long Rifle cartridge, the Cadet featured a 4 ½-inch vent-rib barrel that provided both balance and a clean sighting plane, making it well-suited for target shooting, training, and casual recreational use. Its stainless steel construction gave it a modern appearance while ensuring durability and corrosion resistance, attributes particularly appealing for a pistol intended for frequent use. Equipped with fixed sights and a 10-shot magazine, the Cadet leaned toward simplicity and reliability, emphasizing ease of handling and straightforward function rather than excessive complexity. At 33 ½ ounces, the pistol had a solid, reassuring weight, lending it a stable shooting platform that minimized muzzle rise despite the inherently light recoil of the .22 LR. A distinctive feature of the Colt Cadet was its one-piece black Pachmayr rubber grips, which delivered a secure and comfortable hold, adding a modern ergonomic advantage compared to the traditional wooden or plastic grip panels of earlier Colt rimfires such as the Woodsman. The design reflected Colt’s effort to produce a sleek, practical rimfire pistol at a time when other manufacturers like Ruger and Browning were dominating the market. While praised for its accuracy, balance, and overall shooting comfort, the Colt Cadet had a relatively short production run, which today enhances its desirability among collectors. Its limited availability and status as one of Colt’s last rimfire semi-automatic pistols make it an important transitional piece, bridging Colt’s historical legacy in .22 LR handguns with the company’s gradual withdrawal from the category. For shooters, it remains a reliable and accurate rimfire pistol, while for collectors, it represents a rare and interesting chapter in Colt’s late-20th-century production history.
