Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Double Eagle is a distinctive .45 ACP handgun produced by Colt's Manufacturing Company that represents Colt’s attempt to modernize the classic 1911 platform with a double-action trigger system. Introduced in 1989, the Double Eagle was designed to combine the proven reliability and stopping power of the traditional Colt M1911 design—originally developed by John Moses Browning—with a double-action/single-action trigger mechanism similar to that used in many modern service pistols of the era. Unlike the standard single-action 1911, the Double Eagle allows the first shot to be fired with a longer double-action trigger pull that both cocks and releases the hammer, while subsequent shots are fired in single-action mode as the slide cycles. The pistol typically features a stainless steel or blued steel frame and slide with the familiar 1911 profile, including a five-inch barrel in the Government Model configuration, although other variations, such as the Commander and Officer’s models, were also produced with shorter barrels. One of the major differences from the traditional 1911 design is the elimination of the classic manual thumb safety; instead, the Double Eagle relies on an internal firing-pin safety system and a frame-mounted decocking lever that safely lowers the hammer after a round has been chambered.

The pistol feeds from a single-stack detachable magazine usually holding seven or eight rounds of .45 ACP ammunition, maintaining the slim grip profile associated with the 1911 family. Despite its familiar appearance, the Double Eagle required a redesigned internal mechanism to accommodate the double-action trigger system, resulting in a slightly larger grip frame and a different internal layout compared to standard 1911 pistols. Although it was produced for only a relatively short period during the late 1980s and 1990s, the Colt Double Eagle remains an interesting and somewhat uncommon entry in Colt’s history, appreciated by collectors and enthusiasts as an example of the company’s effort to adapt the legendary 1911 design to the evolving preferences of the modern handgun market.
