The Jack Weigand “Tame the Beast” Package was a custom performance upgrade for the Ruger SP101, offered by Weigand Combat Handguns in the early to mid-1990s. Designed to reduce recoil and improve controllability while preserving the revolver’s legendary durability, the package typically included precision action tuning, ported barrels, and refinements to ergonomics and handling. While most revolvers feature double/single-action triggers, some examples are known to feature double-action-only (DAO) conversions, providing a smooth, consistent trigger pull while reducing snagging during rapid-fire use. Additional custom touches often included dehorning, surface refinishing, and ergonomic enhancements such as upgraded grips, with some revolvers bearing the distinctive Weigand “W” marking to denote the work. Most commonly applied to .357 Magnum SP101s, the “Tame the Beast” Package made the revolver significantly more manageable with full-power loads.
