The Beretta 8040 Cougar is a .40 S&W-chambered semi-automatic pistol from the Italian-made Beretta 8000 Cougar line, first introduced in 1994 as a more compact alternative to Beretta’s full-size service pistols. Developed during the height of the .40 S&W law-enforcement era, the 8040 combined duty-grade durability with improved portability, making it well suited for service and defensive roles alike. Built on a lightweight anodized aluminum alloy frame with a steel slide typically finished in Beretta’s matte black Bruniton coating, the pistol measures approximately 7 inches in overall length and features a 3.6-inch barrel. A defining feature of the Cougar series is its rotating-barrel locking system, engineered to help reduce felt recoil and promote smooth, straight-line cycling. The 8040 was produced in both F and D configurations. The 8040F featured a traditional double-action/single-action trigger system with a slide-mounted safety/decocker, while the 8040D utilized a double-action-only trigger with a spurless hammer and no manual safety, providing a consistent pull on every shot.
