Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 686 is a stainless-steel, double-action revolver built on the company’s robust L-Frame, introduced in 1980 to bridge the gap between the lighter K-Frame .357 Magnums, such as the Model 19, and the larger, heavier N-Frame revolvers. Chambered in .357 Magnum (with the ability also to fire .38 Special), the Model 686 was engineered to withstand the repeated use of high-pressure Magnum loads without the accelerated wear that plagued some K-Frames over time. Its full underlug barrel adds forward weight to help control muzzle rise and recoil, making it an outstanding choice for law enforcement, competition shooting, and hunting applications. The revolver’s stainless-steel construction provides excellent corrosion resistance, ideal for hard use in varying climates, while its clean, modern lines make it as visually appealing as it is functional. Offered in a range of barrel lengths—from compact 2.5-inch models to long-range 8.375-inch versions—the 686 could be configured for concealed carry, duty use, or precision shooting. Mechanically, the Model 686 is renowned for its smooth double-action trigger pull and crisp single-action break, hallmarks of Smith & Wesson’s revolver craftsmanship. Adjustable rear sights and a high-visibility front sight provide a precise sight picture, and the revolver’s weight and L-Frame design distribute recoil evenly for quicker follow-up shots. Available in both six-shot and seven-shot “Plus” cylinder configurations, the 686 offers versatility without sacrificing strength or reliability. Over the years, it has been produced in numerous variants, including Performance Center-tuned models for competitive shooters, and it remains a favorite among revolver enthusiasts for its ruggedness and accuracy. The Model 686 has earned a place as one of the most dependable and well-balanced .357 Magnums ever made, equally at home on the range, in the holster of a peace officer, or in the woods as a sidearm for protection. Its enduring popularity is a testament to its ability to deliver power, precision, and durability in a single, handsome package.
