Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger Vaquero is a single-action revolver that blends classic Old West aesthetics with modern engineering, making it a standout firearm in the world of cowboy action shooting and traditional firearms collecting. Introduced by Sturm, Ruger & Co. in 1993, the Vaquero was designed to resemble the iconic Colt Single Action Army revolver but constructed with the same robust internal mechanisms as Ruger’s Blackhawk series. Unlike the Blackhawk, however, the Vaquero features fixed sights—typically a notch rear and blade front—emulating the original 19th-century revolvers in both form and function. The original "Old Model" Vaquero was built on a heavy-duty frame, capable of handling high-pressure .44 Magnum and .45 Colt loads. However, in 2005, Ruger introduced the “New Vaquero,” which is slightly smaller and closer in size to the Colt SAA, with a redesigned cylinder and frame to better match historical dimensions. While the new model sacrifices the ability to fire heavier loads, it offers better balance, improved handling, and greater appeal for those who value historical accuracy. The Vaquero’s enduring appeal lies in its dual identity as both a practical revolver and a piece of living history. It has become a favorite among Cowboy Action Shooting enthusiasts due to its period-correct design, reliable operation, and the inclusion of Ruger’s transfer bar safety mechanism, which allows for safe carry with all six chambers loaded—a major improvement over 19th-century designs. The revolver is available in several calibers, including .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, and .45 Colt, and it comes in a variety of finishes such as stainless steel, blued steel, and case-hardened frames to match individual tastes and styles. The New Vaquero’s refined grip shape, reminiscent of the Colt 1851 Navy, provides better ergonomics for quick-draw and rapid-fire scenarios, making it a practical and competitive option in action shooting sports. Despite its nostalgic styling, the Vaquero is built with modern metallurgy and machining standards, ensuring durability and reliability far beyond that of the original Old West revolvers it emulates. In this way, the Ruger Vaquero bridges the romanticism of the American frontier with the performance expectations of the modern shooter.
