The Colt Defender is a modern sub-compact variant of the classic Colt 1911 platform, designed specifically for concealed carry and personal defense. Introduced around 1998, the Defender represents Colt’s effort to produce a truly compact 1911 while retaining the traditional single-action trigger and controls that made the platform famous. It features a 3-inch barrel, making it one of the shortest factory 1911 pistols Colt has produced. Typical capacity is 7+1 rounds in .45 ACP or 8+1 in 9mm, and the pistol usually weighs around 24 ounces unloaded, making it easy to carry daily while still offering the familiar ergonomics of a full-size 1911. From a design standpoint, the Defender maintains the classic 1911 operating system—short recoil operation, single-action trigger, and frame-mounted manual safety—but adapts it for a smaller package optimized for carry. Features such as a bull barrel (without a barrel bushing), compact grip frame, and snag-resistant sights were introduced to improve reliability and practicality in a short-slide pistol.
